چکیده

The molecular transport of condensed gas species across the surfaces of the icy satellites of Jupiter and Saturn is examined with the view of describing, in part, certain gross visual features associated with these bodies. Molecular redistribution induced by thermal sublimation and magnetospheric plasma-ion impact on satellites with negligible atmospheres is calculated by assuming that the molecules follow ballistic trajectories and by statistically selecting initial molecular velocities and points of origin. Erosion/deposition profiles so calculated are compared for a variety of satellite sizes and environments in order to understand the relative importance of sublimation and cold corotating plasma-ionand fast plasma-ion-induced transport. The results are sealed to make them useful as new data is available for the icy satellites and their plasma environment. The erosion/deposition profiles are then used to discuss the appearance of a polar frost on Ganymede. A balance of magnetospheric-ion implantation and ion-induced molecular redistribution is used to discuss the observation of embedded SO2 and the darkening of the trailing side on Europa. Ioninduced molecular transport may also limit the deposition of SO2 frost in the polar regions of Io and may be a source of heavy particles in the Jovian and Saturnian magnetospheres.

Seas under Ice: Stability of Liquid-water Oceans within Icy Worlds

Introduction: The possible existence of internal oceans in some icy bodies of the outer Solar System has been suggested through the last years in a joint of observations that cover a wide range of evidences: magnetic fields in Europa and Callisto [1,2], and possibly Ganymede [3], induced by Jupiter’s plasma environment in an electricity-conducting layer near the surface of these satellites, lik...

Convection in ice I shells and mantles with self-consistent grain size

[1] The viscosity of ice I is grain size dependent for temperature and stress conditions appropriate for ice I shells and mantles of large and midsized icy satellites. Satellite thermal evolution, heat flux, critical shell thickness for convection, brittle/ductile transition temperature, and potential for surface deformation are therefore grain size dependent. Using measured grain sizes from te...

Ozone Synthesis on the Icy Satellites

Condensed O2 and ozone on the surfaces of some icy satellites are thought to originate from the radiolytic decomposition of surface water ice by the impact of energetic magnetospheric ions, but decades of laboratory studies have produced no evidence for ozone from the radiolysis of pure water ice. Here we report for the first time the production of ozone in ice by 100 keV ions. Using a method t...

Cartographic and Topographic Mapping of the Icy Satellites of the Outer Solar System

Cartographic and topographic mapping of the major satellites of the Outer Solar System has been in progress since the late 1980’s, beginning with Voyager image data, and incorporating Galileo and recently Cassini imaging data as released to the public. Global image mosaics, based on cartographic control nets, have been produced for all these satellites. In addition, digital topographic maps hav...
